Sri Lanka; an overview

Sri Lanka; 'Nature's Gift to the World', or 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean' is popularly known as 'Ceylon' for centuries for Europeans and outside world. Sri Lanka has a very rich history that dates back to more than 5000 years and is also known by many names such as 'Tambapanni', 'Taprobane', 'Serendib', 'Seylan' and 'Ceylon'.

SRI LANKA, is a tiny island of 65610 SKM in extent and a population of 20 million, is strategically located almost in the centre of the Indian Ocean, just 35 KMS from the southern tip of mainland India.

SRI LANKA, is the cradle of one of the great civilizations of Asia and the world from 3rd century BC. The Buddhist way of life that runs like a golden thread, through the society of Sri Lanka, taught its people to respect and compassion for all living things. The world's first wild life sanctuary was set up in Mihintale, Anuradhapura, in the north central province of Sri Lanka, where Buddhism was first introduced to the Island, by Arahat Mahinda , son of Emperor Ashok of India, during the 3rd century BC. King Devanampiyatissa after attained to Buddhism, declared Mihintale, which was a game park before, a sanctuary allowing all animals to live freely demonstrating the compassion for living beings. The kings, who ruled Sri Lanka, were concerned in conservation and ecological balance, took all possible steps to preserve the environment throughout the history.

SRI LANKA, is gifted with a genial climate and altitudinal variations within a short distances. Sri Lanka owns a beautiful coastline extending over 1600 kms with unpolluted blue warm waters, sandy beaches, sand dunes, coral reefs and other marine resources. In the central hills there are gushing waterfalls, mist clad mountains, valleys, rivers and streams draining in a radial pattern offering breath-taking panorama. Sri Lanka also has over 70 well preserved and protected National Parks, nature reserves and sanctuaries and hundreds of wetlands and mountain ranges. Therefore, the biodiversity in Sri Lanka is said to be greater per SKM of surface area than any other country of the Asian Region. Sri Lanka has many tropical forests such as rain forests, montane forests, monsoon forests, riverine forests and mangrove forests.

SRI LANKAS' Cultural Tourism or Heritage Tourism is a formidable factor in Sri Lanka Tourism. Sri Lanka has 7 (seven) UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely, Sacred City of Anuradhapura, Sacred City of Polonnaruwa, Ancient city of Sigiriya, Sacred City of Kandy, Golden Temple of Dambulla, Old Dutch Fortifications of Galle City and Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve, the natural heritage site.
