Kandy is the last capital of the Sinhala kings of Sri Lanka which ceded to the British Throne in 1815 closing the uninterrupted Sri Lanka history of native kings for 2500 years old. Kandy is Located 488 meters above sea level and surrounded by the beautiful mountains and valleys. Kandy is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka. Kandy is the principal cultural capital of Sri Lanka with a lot of living Monuments hat includes the 'Temple of Tooth', the most sacred shrine for Buddhist all over the world.
There are many interesting and beautiful sites to visit in Kandy depending the time available to you. Some of them are Royal Botanical Gardens, one of the finest in Asia; the foremost University in Sri Lanka that was founded by the British some 60 years ago, the University of Peradeniya is located close to the Botanical Gardens, public market of Kandy, Handicraft and Gem Museum, many Hindu Shrines etc. You also could witness a Cultural Show of Kandy which performs all forms of traditional Dances of Sri Lanka which lasts about an hour.
Excursion; while you stay in Kandy you could take an excursion to Heeloya Village Heeloya, one of the beautiful ancient villages located in the Kandyan Province (34 KMS from Kandy – one way)In this village, our organization-Sri Lanka Ecotourism Foundation- operates a community based agro-ecotourism project. We could meet the community there and they will organize a community lunch for you.
